About Me

I stumbled upon this incredible field as part of an interesting adventure. As I later realized, so did almost every user experience (UX) practitioner I've met along the way!

Here is my story.

How I Got Into UX

1

Graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Coop Program

I had always been comfortable working with computers while growing up and my father was an electrical engineer. So when choosing the degree to pursue in university, computer engineering caught my eye because it combined the analytical and logical parts of my mind with technology as a career.

Worked in the remote sensing industry as a developer.

After university, I landed a C++ programming job working in the remote sensing industry in Calgary as an engineer in training. Here, my work focused on the creation of tools for data transformation and data visualization for technicians working in the office and out in the field.
3

Discovered a love of interfaces and interactions

Through my early work experience, I discovered that I enjoyed the more visual aspects of programming the most: visualizations and user interface design and development. As I set out to learn more about these areas, I came across the field of user experience! I was fascinated by the field and set out to teach myself about the practice to apply to my own work.

Received my P. Eng designation

I pursued my professional engineering designation (P. Eng) through the licensing bodies of Alberta (APEGGA) and later British Columbia (APEGBC). Engineering serves as a foundation in my life and an engineer's commitment on ethics and accountability will always be part of who I am both personally and professionally.
5

Became a user experience developer

After moving to Vancouver, I was able to transition my skillset into front-end web development methodologies (e.g. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery) as a user experience developer. This allowed me to continue focusing on the visual aspects of programming and learn about user experience in practice.

Over the next three years, I built up my expertise in both user experience and development in a fast-paced lifestyle working at a consultancy.

Focusing on User Experience Design Full-Time

The more I learned about user experience, the more I wanted to pursue it as a career. I then focused full-time on user experience design, which is where I found my passion at work.

It’s a perfect fit of my analytical and logical mind, my empathy for people, and my desire to make our digital tools and services easier.
Now

But I don’t do UX ALL the time…

I strongly believe in maintaining a good work-life balance. So when I’m not researching, sketching, and wireframing a new website project or a new experience, you’ll find me shredding mountain bike trails and snowboarding mountains around Vancouver, teaching indoor cycling classes, playing my guitar, going to concerts, making focaccia and pasta from scratch, and cheering on my Edmonton Oilers.
